Which vehicle to replace our Fiat Multipla and Saab 9-5?

We currently own a 2003 Fiat Multipla. It's been very good but is getting old now, and last year we bought a 2008 Saab 9-5 estate to replace it but found it too useful to let go. We now want to replace them both with one vehicle. We travel to France four or five times a year, carry two dogs and up to five people. The Multipla's load capacity with the back row of seats out is very useful from time to time, but it is not as refined as it might be. The Saab is fine - more refined, but not as versatile. What would you suggest to replace them both? Diesel is essential, a high driving position is good, and we have a total to spend of around £16,000 including value of the existing cars.

Ford S-Max, or, for more space, Ford Galaxy.
