What's wrong with the gearbox in my semi-automatic Toyota Yaris?

I have a semi-automatic W-reg Toyota Yaris. Last year the hydraulic clutch motor broke. I have had it reconditioned and it's been working like a dream, but recently it won't work. I get in the car, start it up, put it in first and drive down the road, then the car struggles to get into second or third gear. It just stays stuck in gear. If I can get it through the gears it drives like a dream in the high gears, and you wouldn't think there was a problem. What's wrong with it?

Actuator failure. But if you can't find someone to sort that out cheaply, Toyota will want bundles of cash for a new actuator.
