Should I buy an ex-police Renault Megane which is stuck in limp mode?
Should I buy this 2001/51 Renault Megane? It's an ex-police car with all service history etc, but they say its stuck in limp mode. It's priced at £595. Is it a dud if their mechanics can't solve the problem?

I'd say don't buy. Obviously it depends on the competence of the mechanics, but if the problem is the throttle body or the ECU then rectifying it could cost more than £595, and a leggy nine-year-old ex-police Megane may be worth no more than that anyway.
