Should Ford fix the ESP fault on my Ford Focus Ghia?

I have a Ford Focus Ghia 2-litre TDCI which is now four years old. When it was three years old the "ESP System Fault" message came up. I live in France and the garage informed me that the part alone was 1700 Euros and they suggested I wrote to Ford complaining. I have done so but have not even had the courtesy of a reply. Do I shut up and pay up, or should Ford assist me as it's something that shouldn't give out so quickly?
