Does the SEAT Leon have a known issue with tyre noise from the rear wheels?

We bought a 2006 SEAT Leon 2.0 TDi Stylance in January 2010. It's an excellent car, but there's a horrendous loud rumbling from the rear tyres. It's at it's worst at 50mph, so if you're say on the M4 in roadworks at 45mph it's really awful. I've been to a dealer in Congresbury near our home in North Somerset. Even before test driving the car they knew what it was.

Their mechanic said its the set up of the car rear axle/suspension which causes a wear pattern which results in the road noise. He said its a "known issue" with these Leons, and that some makes of tyres wear differently and are quieter. The only way to stop the noise is to change the tyres. He also said the existing tyres are perfectly safe as they are and have lots of life.

I'm afraid that is a characteristic of the car and will be worse on some road surfaces than others. Michelin Energy Saver or Michelin Pilot Primacy HP should be quieter in the summer, but are low rolling resistance so in very cold temperatures can be noisy.
