What is the future for owners of diesel cars?

Does my six year old diesel BMW (which runs pretty smoothly) have any future at all? Or would you advise me to look for a non-diesel car?

See what comes up in the budget tomorrow. Next week the World Health Organisation will reveal that direct injected petrol engines kill far more people with PMTs than diesel engines do, and, depending on which papers take this story, we will all be thrown into confusion yet again.
