What's wrong with my Ford Focus' speedometer?

I have a high mileage 2000 Ford Focus 1.4 model. My speedo keeps dropping to 0 and I lose the mileage data at the same time. Does anyone have any ideas?

Failed oil seal to the speed sensor in the final drive. Costs about £100 to replace it.
