Need a 4x4 with low running costs -which?

I have just sold my old Land Cruiser as it was proving too expensive to run. We have three kids and seven dogs and need something that will cope with motorway driving on a daily basis. We will need to have some 4x4 capability too, as we also have horses. Can you recommend something with low running costs and decent reliability?

The obvious answer is a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV because that is low CO2 and can tow and most importantly isn't diesel. You can also now get a Toyota RAV-4 petrol hybrid with 2WD or 4WD, but it isn't plug-in.
