How should we store our Mitsubishi Colt and BMW 3 Series for three months?

In January 2011 my wife and I are taking an extended holiday in New Zealand. We will be away from mid January until early April. We have two cars, a Mitsubishi Colt 1.0 petrol and a BMW 320d Touring. What should we do to ensure that the cars remain in good shape for our return? We have a double garage which could be cleared to house both cars and also have friends/family nearby who could perform some basic tasks, if that helps. We had a bad experience of leaving a Vectra for three weeks in January a few years ago. It was left in an open car park and was very hard to start and the disc brakes had seized up, presumably with corrosion. Can you please advise?
