Buying a used Audi A3 - which engine is best?

I am well aware of the problems of certain Volkswagen engines, but I like the old A3 5 door body shape as visibility out is good. Which is the best, most reliable and quietest diesel engine in the range and what year(s) should I look for. Also are there any transmission/electrical problems?

Unfortunately there is no avoiding the EA189 NOx emissions issue and currently I have five cases of the fix not working on VW Tiguans with the same engine. However, though the brake pedal switch can lead to hesitation, the 6-speed 3-year maintenance wet clutch s-tronic/DSG auto has been much more reliable than the 7-speed, maintenance free dry clutch s-tronic/DSG.
