Where can I get a replacement key for my Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

I have been told I need to spend £240 on a new electronic key for my 1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class as the main key stopped working suddenly. Isn't there anywhere I can get the existing key re-programmed without having to pay that kind of money?
