MX5 vs GT86 - Which is best?

I am thinking of buying a sports car. What is your view on the Mazda MX-5 (2.0-litre not the 1.5) and Toyota GT86. Cost wise there is not much difference between the two. Is the GT86 a real four-seater (kids in the back)? Do you have any further info on the Tiaga top version of MX5 due in the winters?

What these offer is fantastic handling. But the problem with all of them is lack of torque at low revs, to the extent you can find yourself needing 4th for slight motorway inclines. As long as you're happy with having to change down when you wouldn't normally expect to, fine. A turbo would overcome this, but that wasn't the point of the design. The MX5 based FIAT Spider does, in fact, have a turbo and, despite a mere 1.4 litre capacity, actually has more mid-range torque than the MX5 2.0 litre. I remember the Mk II MX5 1.6 that came with a measly 88hp and feeling stupid not even having the power to overtake.

Huge amounts of grip. Superb handling. Free-revving 2.0-litre non-turbo engine produces 200PS.

An utter hoot to drive thanks to its great handling. Lighter, 1.5-litre versions feel best, while the 2.0-litre's extra performance is welcome. Well-equipped for the money.
