Ford Focus - strong diesel smell when starting

When I start my 2012 Ford Focus, usually first thing in the morning, there is a strong engine fume/diesel smell for a few seconds that is quite overpowering. You can smell it inside and outside the car, but it doesn't happen every time the car is started.

It's done 95,000 miles and I've had the diesel particulate filter changed recently, but this hasn't solved the problem. Any ideas on what this might be please?

EGR not working properly or one or more of the glowplugs not igniting.
