Downing grading from 2 cars to 1

We are downgrading from two cars to one. We roughly do 7000 miles a year, split between short shopping trips to 200 mile plus round trips. We are not sure which would be best: a petrol Fiat 500, electric Volkswagen Golf or a Nissan Qashqai diesel. What do you recommend?

A Fiat 500 has the advantage of the most comfortable front seats in any small car because the squabs are long and uniquely tilt adjustable. You will get 50mpg on the motorway from either the 1.2 or the TwinAir. But not a lot of boot space and only the rear seatbacks fold so you don't get a flat floor.

You probably want something bigger and a Nissan Qashqai 1.2 DIG-T would probably do the job: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/nissan/nissan-qash.../ Avoid the automatic.
