Can I disconnect the EGR valve in my 1999 Vauxhall Vectra?

I have a 1999 1.8 Vauxhall Vectra and I've been having problems with it since we got it. After spending around £160 on replacing some parts, I think its been the EGR valve all along. It's been like it was stuttering as we drove it, but since I unplugged the EGR valve its been running like a dream. I've been told by a mechanic that it won't do any harm running the car with it unplugged, but would like your opinion and, if it is ok, is there any way the plug can be bypassed so that the light would go out?

Unplugging and blanking off the EGR is a standard bodge fix for older 1.8s in Vectras and Astras. Crankcase fumes will emit, but the car will run.
