What could be causing gearbox/clutch problems in my Mitsubishi Grandis?

I have an 06 Mitsubishi Grandis diesel, which has done about 24,000 miles. On a couple of occasions this summer, after motorway journeys, the clutch pedal fails to engage until it is depressed much further than usual, and it becomes very hard to change gear. The clutch also doesn't lift when the pressure is released and it needs to be lifted using toes.

I've taken the car to the dealer, although at that point it was okay and they said there was nothing they could do. I'm concerned that there may be debris in the clutch causing it to stick, and that ignoring it risks both damaging it further and breaking down. The car was bought secondhand through the main dealer 18 months ago. Any suggestions?

When you depress the clutch pedal,it should actually separate the clutch plate from the flywheel, so allowing smooth gear changes. In your case this is not happening, and could be due to a number of faults. Firstly I would check the clutch master cylinder for leaks (check the reservoir to see if the level has fallen). If that's ok then check the clutch slave cylinder again for leaks, and replace if necessary. If none of the checks reveal any leaks or faults, then I'm afraid it may require the the clutch itself to be stripped and checked, ie the pressure plate, release bearing, and friction plate. Unfortunately, if the problem only happens now and again, it would be nearly impossible for a garage to identify the problem, without stripping the clutch mechanism down.
