Is the Skoda 1.4 TSI an unreliable engine?
We are looking at buying a 2012 Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSI but have read that the engine has been recalled due to a problem with the cam/chain belt resulting in engine failure. What is your understand of the issue and should I avoid a 2012 1.4 TSI engine?

More powerful 'twincharger' versions of the engine have been recalled, but there is still a fundamental issue with the timing chains, the links of which were stamped out on worn stamping tools. Coupled with VAG's ridiculous longlife oil servicing, this can lead to failure of the chain, but obviously doesn't always.
