Why is my Peugeot 206's engine management warning light coming on?

My Peugeot 206 XSI 1.6 petrol has an anti-pollution fault and engine management fault light on the dashboard. It also went to reduced power with little or no acceleration available, but was able to drive home ok. I stopped and started it again and the fault still showed up as an anti-pollution fault, but the power is back. The engine management fault light is still showing. I've read a load of forums where it says they get conned by the dealers who have not got a clue. One suggested catalytic converter filters, but what is the real answer?

It might be nothing more than a dirty lambda sensor in the exhaust manifold. Try some fuel system cleaner in the tank topped with Shell V-Power petrol, then give it some beans.
