Diesel or petrol?

I am driving a BMW 520D manual 57 registration for about 14000 miles per year, 80% in heavy traffic (A406).Very good car but I have problems with the DPF. I would like to buy another one a bit it smaller, automatic.

What would you recommend, a trouble free car. My car was trouble free apart of the DPF.

Even a proper functioning DPF gets clogged with ash by around 85,000 miles. So if you want to avoid DPF problems over a long life and a high mileage, don't get a diesel. Over 100,000 miles a Mondeo size diesel saves about £4,700 on fuel. But you have to set that against the cost of cleaning or replacing DPF, replacing EGR, replacing DMF (on manuals and DSG) and replacing turbos.
