Reliable second-hand car advice?

My sister and partner have £4-5k to spend on a used car. They want something reliable and cheap to maintain so are thinking Honda Civic or maybe Ford Focus. Her partner wants something sporty/ cool so is keen on a Civic Type R. Is this is a good idea or should they be looking at something else? .

An original Civic Type R going cheap might have been boy raced to death, or crashed and repaired. So take care. Better to look for a Civic 2.0 Type S 5-door. 160PS and same basic chain cam 2.0 engine as Type R with 40PS less.
