Best family-sized hybrid?

We would like to upate our Toyota Verso and are thinking about hybrids as most of our journeys are short city trips of 1-5 miles with a 60-80 mile trip once or twice a month max. My husband is interested in whether we can find a 4WD hybrid option for annual trips to the Alps but not a neccessity. Which hybrid would you recommend which is similar in same size to the Verso?

Toyota Prius and Auris hybrids are among the most reliable, low maintenance and economical vehicles you can buy. If you want to progress to a 4WD hybrid, then there is a 4WD hybrid RAV-4 on the way. Otherwise a Lexus RX400h or 450h.
