Mud flaps

I fitted mud flaps to my Panda and I'm wondering if they're worth it. Fiat normally only allow rear guards, which are fine since they screw into the plastic bumper, the fronts are from the (2008-) Ford Ka. However, I've been reading some real horror stories about dirt and grime which gets behind them and corrosion begins leading to rust and in some awful cases, holes in the bodywork. Would you recommend mud flaps on all cars, or is it something you would avoid altogether.

These days the front and rear valences of all cars are plastic so rust isn't a problem. What can be is tearing off the flaps. I had them on a 205 GTI in the 1980s to help stop stoned flying up and damaging people's windscreens on dirt roads in Spain.
