Can you recommend an appropriate vehicle for use in Thailand?

I emailed you last year about the 2000 Isuzu Adventure 3.0 Turbo that we were "inheriting" with our house in Thailand. We now live in Khok Kloi (Phang Nga province) and, having driven the beast for a few months we know we must change it, as it feels like driving with the handbrake on and it yawls all over the road. Have you any recommendations on what to replace it with?

As insurance is a fair bit less for under 3.0-litre engines, we were thinking along the lines of a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2WD GT 2.5 or Toyota Fortuner 2WD 2.7V. Could you please give your opinion on these vehicles and are there any similar vehicles common in Thailand that you feel would be a better buy? We'll mostly be travelling on decent roads, not much off-roading, so don't feel that a 4WD is necessary.

The Fortuner petrol gobbles fuel, which even in Thailand is getting expensive. I'd go for an Isuzu D-Max 2.5 I-TEQ or a facelift Chevrolet Colorado with the same engine. We've got both. They do 36 - 40mpg, the best of any pick-up. Don't go for an MU-7 7-seat SUV. They are ridiculously expensive used and not good value for money. Better a king cab or double cab 2wd pick-up. Note that basic low slung 2WD pick-ups do not have limited slip read diffs, but 'Hilanders' do.
