Which car will offer the best value for a high annual mileage?

Owing to a new job, my annual mileage is about to increase significantly. I will do 24,000 miles in commuting alone, so I am expecting a mileage probably in excess of 30,000 miles per annum. Is there a 'best way' in terms of car purchase for this to minimise long term cost, given that residual values will be hammered by the mileage? My current car, recently purchased, is a five-year-old diesel small car (currently at 65,000 miles) which easily returns 55mpg.

Buy a cheap used diesel. Better a Focus II 1.6TDCI 90 than a 110 because the 90 does not have a DPF and DPFs only seem to last 100,000 miles.
