How do I transfer my private number plate to a new vehicle?

I have a private number plate on a vehicle that I am going to trade in for a new car in September. What is the best way of transferring this to the new vehicle?

Transfer the registration to a retention certificate and put the part-exchange on an age-related plate now. Once you have the new car, switch the reg from the retention certificate to it. Don't trust a dealer to do it for you. They have no interest in this and if they make any mistakes, you are liable and could lose the reg.
