Tyre noise ratings: What do they mean?

I an just about to replace the tyres on my Audi A3 which have been good but noisy. On checking other tyres, I notice that some are rated for db noise ratings. What do these ratings mean?

Yes. Tyre dba ratings are usually in the range 63 - 73. 63 is quiet. 73 is noisy.
