Why are my Volkswagen Polo's headlights constantly on?

I have just purchased a Volkswagen Polo on a 10 plate. My lights are constantly on when the engine is running. I cannot turn them off at all unless I turn the ignition off. I think there is a fault on the light switch, as when I turn it to dim they just have little spotlights on. Do you think this is an electrical fault or the switch?

The car has Daytime Running Lights. Didn't the salesman tell you? There is a reader suggestion to switch them off here (but not to switch them back on again): www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volkswagen/polo-v-20...d
