Why is my fuel economy so poor?

I bought a Peugeot 308 four months ago and have clocked up 1000 miles. My average fuel consumption has been 33mpg at an average speed of 20mph. Is this really the best the car can achieve for town driving? My 1996 Ford Mondeo did better than this!

That's nuts because I am currently running a 308 1.2THP 130 and over 7,031 miles it has averaged 48.19mpg. One reason for your poor economy (apart from stop-start short runs from cold) could be the fuel you are using. All current engines are optimised on Shell V-Power Nitro Plus, so will emit more and does around 5mpg less on standard 95Ron petrol.
