Can you recommend a cheap used car?

I'm looking for a cheap second hand car for my partner. She only does 4000 miles a year, but needs something with five doors and a large boot.

We've narrowed it down to the Honda Jazz, Mitsubishi Colt and Mazda 2. We've seen a few of each but was wondering

a) which is best
b) do these all have timing belts or chains? We'd ideally prefer a chain engine to keep ongoing maintenance costs as low as possible.

All Jazz are chain cam and so are Colts. The old Mazda 2 built at Valencia were Ford Fusion based and belt cam. Check out the problem areas at www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar
