How can I check whether a car I'm buying has a current MoT?

I am considering purchasing a little runabout for work and the guy who is selling it tells me it has a valid MoT certificate, but can't put his hands on it at the moment. The car is tidy but I don't want to leave a 50 per cent deposit until I'm sure it has a valid MoT. How can I find out if there is a current one which is valid, albeit if it is only for two months?

You need to see the MoT.

Official advice is to place the French Crit'Air sticker on the right side of vehicle windscreen but for most UK cars this will impinge more than 40mm into zone B and won't that therefore be an MoT failure?
