Tyre sizes for Mazda 5 - what should I be looking for?

My friend in France has a 2014 Mazda 5 with 205 x 50 x 17 tyres fitted as OE. Given the harsh ride these give, he asks if its possible to fit different size tyres to give a more comfortable ride?

16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 Toyo J48 tyres. Fantastic grip and excellent ride quality.
