What's causing my Peugeot 307SW to emit smoke when stuck in traffic?

When I was driving my 2002 Peugeot 306 SW HDI turbo in slow traffic recently, smoke came out from bonnet which smelled like a burning clutch, and then I couldn't engage the gears at all. The engine temp was up to between 90 and 100. What seems to be the problem?
