Can I remove the plastic sheet from the underneath of my Citroen Xsara Picasso's engine bay?

My Citroen Xsara Picasso seems to have a large sheet of hard plastic across the bottom of the engine bay. It appears to have come loose, and as I don't know what its purpose is, I don't know if I can just remove it. Can you give me some advice please?

It aids the aerodynamics of the car, hence fuel economy, and stops road salt being blown into the engine compartment. Better to re-fix it if you can.
