Broken heater on Vauxhall Astra

Can you tell me why the heater on my 2004 Vauxhall Astra only blows warm air on the highest setting? The temperature gauge is also refusing to work.

Probably because the heater matrix is blocked with sludge so the hot coolant is not getting through.
