What's the best car for a 19 year old driver?

My son will soon be in the market for a car. He will need it to cover long motorway distances (south England to Yorkshire and Cumbria on a regular basis) and it must be comfortable, as he's 6 ft 4.

A new car is an option, along with nearly new. Insurance will also be a factor as he is a new driver. What do you recommend?

First he'd better take some motorway driving awareness lessons. A FIAT 500 TwinAir is remarkably comfortable because it has lots of headroom and excellent front seats with long squabs that are adjustable for tilt (avoid the 1.2 that has not taken well to EU6).

Otherwise, new Citroen C1 or Peugeot 108 with the bigger 1.2 engine. Or, of course, a VW Up, but again with the more powerful of the two engines.

Stylish and full of character. Really affordable to buy. Low running costs.
Good standard specification for a low price, cheap to run and cheap to insure, surprisingly mature driving experience and capable out of town too.
Cheap to run, improved interior quality and refinement over previous C1, available with retractable fabric roof, decent at motorway speeds.
