Why's the fuel filter alarm light coming on in my KIA Cee'd?

I have had a KIA Cee'd 1.6 LS for 15 months now and have been very happy with the performance. It is used mainly for longer distance motorway driving when I do use it, so I'm baffled that I am intermittently getting the fuel filter alarm light coming up on the dashboard. I know that short driving distances can lead to this alarm on diesel cars, but I rarely do short distances. Should I just ignore the warnings, or could it be something more serious?

Is this a diesel? Or petrol? If diesel the problem could be with the fuel you are using that might be contaminated, and the fuel filter is warning you of excess water in it, for example.
