Can you recommend a low-cost, reliable small car?

A member of my family is having to drastically reduce outgoings but still needs a car for local journeys. I realise that there is no such thing as a "cheap" car but is there a Fiesta-sized model at the bottom of the used-car market that is more reliable than others, and for which reasonably priced spares are available?

The best is the Toyota Yaris - very reliable, cheap to run and parts are easily available, although it should rarely go wrong anyway.
