How can I protect my car's paintwork from stone chips?

I'm thinking of buying a new car in the next year and would like, if possible, to protect it's paintwork from scratches and stone chips. There are numerous paint protectors and films on the market - would you recommend any of them?

Do what the police do, and get the car 'wrapped'. Costs around £1,000.
