Poor ride on an Avensis

On most roads except smooth motorways, the ride is jittery and bumpy in my 2012 Toyota Avensis. You feel jiggled in the seat, which in itself is comfortable.

The car is on 215/55/17 Goodyear Excellence tyres. Is there anything I can do to improve ride quality/comfort?

These are not excessively low profile tyres, so I wonder if they are overpressured. If pressures are checked when the tyres are hot, the pressures could be 5PSI higher than when they are cold, so the answer might be to reduce the cold pressures by a few PSI.
