Can you recommend a reliable replacement for our Renault Clio for under £3000?

I have between £2000 -£3000 to spend on a secondhand car. It's actually for my fiancee who used to drive a Clio, but that has just died. Can you recommend a car which would be a good buy in that price range? We're looking in the small car bracket and would want something reliable.

If you want something reliable we'd suggest sticking to one of the Japanese makes. In terms of small cars you can go for something like a Toyota Yaris, Honda Jazz or a Nissan Micra. All are good value for money and there's plenty of choice for your budget. Our favourite would be the Yaris as it's incredibly reliable and well-built. We know people who have had models for 10 years with no problems, breakdowns or faults whatsoever.
