Diesel cars for short runs - are there still problems?
I bought a new Mazda a few years ago but it developed DPF problems as I only did about 7k miles annually and mainly short journeys. I want to buy diesel and do roughly similar mileage but I find most of the mid to high range models from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW are all diesels with favourable tax compared with petrol models. Surely their owners don't do high mileages so do these have the same problems with low mileages and short runs?

The problems seem to have been overcome with a new generation of diesel engines: The Renault 1.6DCI 130 (also fitted to Nissans), Mazda's 2.2 Skyactiv diesel and GM's new 1.6CDTI. But other engines that seem to have suffered little or no DPF trouble are the Honda 1.6iDTEC and the Hyundai/KIA 1.6CRDI.
