Timing chain failure on BMW X3

We brought a 2007 BMW X3 from a second hand car dealer, but 10 weeks later the timing chain failed. The garage where we brought the car have said they are going to replace the engine, but what guarantees should we get if this is carried out? Do we have the right to get a full refund for our car even if they are prepared to repair it?

You do have the right of a full refund, minus an allowance for the use of the car equivalent to its fall in value over the 11 weeks. But in the circumstances the garage is doing the right thing in sourcing another engine. Of course this will be a used engine. You can't expect a new engine in a 7 year old car. Your warranty remains the same, dated from the date you bought the car. Law here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
