Bought a car in good faith, but then discovered it was stolen - what are my options?

My wife has bought a used Nissan Juke. She found it in the classified section of a national magazine and paid £8000 in good faith and checked everything whilst with the car. She also HPI checked the care-number plate only-prior to leaving home, everything came back ok and she bought the car.

The following day my brother -in-law who was once a car dealer came round to see the new car. He checked over the vehicle and discovered not all was ok. He checked the chassis number-the original chassis number-via HPI and discovered the vehicle was stolen from Bedfordshire. We contacted Bedfordshire Police and Metropolitan Police to report the situation. By 1400hrs Essex Police were at our home and the vehicle was seized and statements taken.

As we have acted in total good faith and in just over 12 hours the vehicle was declared by us so that it could be recovered by the authorities do we have any claim to try and recover any of our lost monies.

Check what guarantee you got from HPI for the level of service you paid for. If HPI failed to inform you of the vehicle's status on the basis of the information you supplied, then HPI may be liable. But if the car was on stolen plates and you did not give the VIN, then HPI is not liable.

In that case you have to take immediate legal action against whoever sold you the car, and seek the help of the publication where it was advertised, which is supposed to 'police' its advertisers.
