Is the Peugeot 5008 better than the Ford S-Max?

We're struggling to make a choice between a Ford S-Max and the new Peugeot 5008. We're trying hard not to be dazzled by the bells and whistles on the 5008, and do feel slightly nervous that with so much technology, there's a lot that could go wrong. But the drive felt smoother in the Peugeot and WhatCar? suggests that the value depreciation and ongoing costs are both better than the Ford. But what of the reputation for expensive French parts, and Peugeot's history of poor reliability? Are we mad to be tempted by a lower initial outlay rather than paying at least £3000 more for the S-Max?

Judge it by engine sizes and what you actually need. There is no 1.6 diesel S-Max, but there is of the 5008. The 5008 is pleasant to drive, but the handling is nothing like as good as an S-Max. They are both video tested at www.honestjohn.co.uk.
