Should I have the inlet swirl flaps removed from my BMW X5?

I was most interested to read your advice to a BMW E53 X5 owner, suggesting having the engine inlet manifold swirl flaps removed. Because of a repetitive computer warning, my own 45,000 mile BMW 330d had the Swirl Flaps cleaned last week by my local BMW dealer. He suggested that they could dislodge and enter the engine through the manifold. Is this a well-known fault common across the BMW range or only on diesel powered models?

The failure was common on 2.0-litre diesels and 3.0-litre diesels up to about 2006. More information in the E46 and E39 entries in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar. The supplier of the kit (www.pmwltd.co.uk/) gets very good reports.
