How accurate is the fuel gauge in my Toyota Auris Hybrid?

I have a 2010 Toyota Auris Hybrid T-Spirit and have a query about the fuel gauge. The ‘Optitron’ fuel gauge has 10 blocks on it which, when it gets to the last one, flashes and displays a Low Fuel Warning. Is the gauge accurate? One block equates to a tenth of a tank (I would expect there to be some contingency built in)? I have also looked at the new Auris Hybrid Tourer but am not keen on the interior. It's not as nice as the previous version in my opinion. I like the economy of the Hybrid and do not do sufficient mileage to warrant a diesel. Can you suggest any alternatives?

Car fuel gauges are never very accurate because they rely on a float in a relatively flat tank. If a car fuel tank was a narrow cylinder then the gauge could be more accurate. The new Auris hybrid hatchback and Tourer are lower. If you want more height you could opt for the 7-seater Prius Plus, but I rate the Auris HSD as the best choice.

Decent combination of ride and handling that might suit some people better than a harder sprung Golf or a Civic. A few inches taller than a Golf of Focus so easier to get in and out.
