I parked in a car park for a closed shopping centre and have been charged - can I appeal?

On Saturday evening between 7pm and 10pm I parked in the Rishworth Centre Retail Park in Dewsbury. As all the stores were closed and the parking notices did not refer to any restrictions other than two hours' free parking, I assumed parking was not restricted after shop hours. There were a dozen or so other cars there as well. I have been sent a parking charge by Parking Eye £100 for staying 53 minutes over the two hours. I thought the basis of the parking charge was that it was for shop customers. The shops were all closed. What do you recommend?

Here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/private-parking-penalties/ There are three stages of appeal. But basically you can't assume anything about any private parking space.
