Is this Citroen Picasso a good deal, or should we buy a Vauxhall Meriva?

My daughter needs a new car. We were going for a Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 16v Breeze 2005 with 62,000 miles for £3999, and she needs me to lend £1500 for this p/x deal. When we get to garage they've got a Citroen Picasso 2.0 HDi SX 5-door with 64,000 miles. She liked it but it's a staff member's private sale, meaning no p/x. They offered us £2500 on her Mercedes-Benz A-Class. If I could sell this privately for £3500 she doesn't need to borrow £1500. What would you do ?

Judging by the feedback I get, the steering motor of the Meriva will probably fail. This Picasso is a very old one at eight years old. I would not pay £3500 for an '02. I'd pay £3000 max or £2500 for a private sale, which this is.
