What do you think of Volkswagen's DSG gearbox and water-cooled turbocharger?

I have just ordered a Volkswagen Golf 1.4SE with the DSG gearbox. My reason is that, after test-driving most of the other manufacturers in this range, I feel this is the best car. However there are two points that I would appreciate your comments:

1. The reliability of the gearbox. My dealer says that the current boxes have been modified and therefore are much more reliable. Even if they do fail Volkswagen is very sympathetic to repair bills.

2. You suggest that turbo engines should be allowed to tick over before switching them off to allow the oil in the turbo to cool. My Volkswagen dealer states that the turbo on the 1.4 TS is water cooled with a secondary pump therefore negating this process. Your comments, please

Yes, the Golf Mk VII probably is now best in class. He's basically right about the turbo. It is water cooled, but it's still wise to let a very hot turbo idle for 30 seconds before switching off. VAG has just had to recall 384,000 7-speed DSGs in China for the sort of problem readers have been reporting to me and I have been experiencing. I can't tell you if VAG has fixed it. The fundamental problem is that VAG makes you press the footbrake to get the lever from N to D, and the ECU takes a signal from the brake pedal switch to tell it if the car is braking. There can be a momentary delay in this signal, causing the ECU to shut off the throttle for a second or so when you are emerging from a side road. Not always. Can be okay for a week, then it happens when you least expect it.
