How can I claim for damage caused by a pothole?

Having suffered a burst tyre after hitting a pothole while driving on a wet road in the dark, what procedures should I follow in order to make a claim against the council concerned? I have sympathy for them as it is small rural authority that has been starved of funds over the years by successive governments.

First check if the pothole has already been reported on www.fixmystreet.co.uk and www.potholes.co.uk. If it has not been, then please report it on those websites. But if the pothole had not been reported prior to your damage then the council is not liable for not having filled it.
